At the start of 2023 I decided to get started on my cold shower journey and haven’t looked back since. I’ve now reached just over 6 months of cold showers.

Cold showers have become extremely popular over the last few years and I though I’d jump on the bandwagon.

I start with a normal warm shower to clean myself properly, then at the end, switch it to cold for 2 or 3 minutes. I have been doing this every single day for the last 6months.

Why Did I Start Taking Cold Showers?

I started taking cold showers after reading Wim Hof’s book “The Wim Hof Method

When I initially started reading this book, I had no intention of ever taking cold showers.

Throughout the book, Wim subtly prompts and encourages you to get started. “15 seconds to change your life” is something he often says. (Or similar)

By the time I finished the book, I was convinced to give it a go. I wanted to see if cold showering for 30 days would increase my productivity.

After completing 30 days, I decided the benefits were too good to quit. So, here I am just over 6 months later.

Has My Initial Reaction to Cold Showers Changed After 6 Months?

My initial reaction to cold showers has definitely changed over 6months.

When I first started, I had to breathe deeply for at least 30 seconds to get over the initial shock. Even after the 30 seconds, I was still breathing carefully to help me relax.

Now, the initial shock seems to last about 5-10 seconds.

After that, I can pretty much endure the cold without feeling like I’m freezing myself.

My body has seemed to get used to the cold. I don’t find it as challenging anymore, I just get it done.

Have I noticed Any Difference in My Skin or Hair?

After 6 months of cold showers, I feel like my skin has got clearer.

I’m not someone who felt like they had particularly bad skin in the first instance, however, I feel like my skin is smoother and less oily.

There are many articles that suggest the benefits for both skin and hair health.

I haven’t noticed any specific difference in my hair quality, although I don’t pay too much attention to my hair, so even if there are benefits, I’m not sure I would notice.

Have I Noticed Any Difference in My Immune System?

I can’t say I have noticed any specific Immune benefits.

However, I have not been sick or felt like I’ve had a cold.

Often, throughout the year I may gain mild colds, but since taking cold showers, I have not had any.

I’m not sure if this is coincidence or as a result of taking the cold showers.

I don’t get sick often, so I find it hard to know if my immune system has benefited.

If I’m able to keep this going for the next few years I’ll be better equipped to answer this question.

How Have I Motivated Myself to Stay Consistent?

Taking cold showers doesn’t take much time at all so I find it hard to make excuses not to do it.

When it comes to going to the gym, or for a jog, there are a million excuses you can use.

However, when contemplating if to finish my shower with a couple of minutes of cold water, all I have to do is turn the tap to get started.

This turning of the tap requires very little effort and I tell myself every day, “All you have to do is turn the tap”.

I also love the benefits. I’m always more awake and alert and ready to tackle my day after experiencing the cold. The thought of this helps to motivate me to continue.

Yes, and I’m going to stick with only doing it in the morning or during the day.

Every time I do it in the evening it wakes me up and I find it a little more difficult to get to sleep because I feel too alert.

Others have reported having a better night’s sleep if doing it in the evening, but this was not my experience.

Having my cold shower in the morning wakes me up.

If I shower in the late morning or early afternoon it gives me a boost of endorphins helping me to be productive in whatever I have to do.

Cold showering has definitely made me more productive in the morning.

Once I shower, I’m ready to tackle my day.

Prior to taking cold showers, there may be days where I take really long to get my day started, procrastinate and be lazy.

Since doing these cold showers I can’t think of a time where I’ve had an unproductive morning.

One of the other benefits is getting a mental win at the start of the day.

Just like making your bed, once you’ve done your cold shower, you know you’ve achieved something and the day has only just begun.

What Potential Drawbacks Have You Noticed From 6 Months of Cold Showers?

Because I start with a warm shower to wash myself, it takes me longer to get ready and to complete my shower.

After my warm shower, I do the additional 2 or 3 minutes of pure cold water which takes up extra time, not to mention extra water!

At the time of writing this, I’ve been experimenting with pure cold showers because it’s summer and It makes getting ready super quick.

I’m not sure I’ll continue this in the winter, we’ll see.

It’s one thing having a cold shower when you’re already warm, but having a cold shower in winter when you’re already cold sounds brutal.

Will You Continue to Take Cold Showers?

Absolutely!

I aim to have cold showers as part of my routine indefinitely.

It’s about taking it day by day, but my next aim is to get to one year of cold showers.

Ending my shower any other way is not something I can see changing anytime soon.

In my university days, I made the decision to always try and challenge myself. Our lecturers would often look for volunteers during classes.

They needed people to ask or answer questions to keep the discussions lively. Thinking it would help me understand the subjects better, I stepped up.

This decision felt like diving headfirst into the deep end of a pool. The experience was overwhelming and, yes, uncomfortable. But I saw it as a chance to challenge myself, to grow from this self-imposed test.

I volunteered repeatedly, pushing my own boundaries. It was a leap of faith, driven by my desire to develop a growth mindset.

This was my first step towards the journey of becoming a public speaker.

What is Public Speaking?

Public speaking is the process of communicating information to a live audience.

The purpose of public speaking can range from simply transmitting information, to motivating people to act, to simply telling a story.

Good public speakers should be able to change the emotions of their listeners, not just inform them.

Public speaking can include any form of speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners.

Skilled public speakers are able to use their voice, tone, and body language to keep an audience engaged and convey their message effectively.

I’m a wellbeing speaker and often deliver wellbeing workshops and webinars to help companies support the health and wellbeing of their employees.

As an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust I also get invited to events to share my business journey and story to help fundraise and inspire others.

When I can, I try to speak with local young people to help inspire, encourage and motivate them to do positive things in their life.

I grew up with humble beginnings and it’s lovely to be able to give back in this way.

Embracing Failure as a Public Speaker

Failure is often looked at as a negative but I see it as the complete opposite.

When we fail, it gives us an opportunity to learn and grow.

When I initially started stepping up at university to answer questions in front of the class, I was often hesitant, my answers didn’t come across with confidence and sometimes I stumbled on my words.

However, each time I did it, it allowed me to learn and improve until it got to a point where I felt comfortable volunteering to answer questions.

Failing is a natural part of any form of learning. If we’re not failing, how do we know what to improve on?

A quote I love to be reminded of is “Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of the success”  I can’t reference who said it but it always reminds me that failing is okay.

In order to embark on your public speaking journey, you have to be willing to fail, but most importantly, learn from it.

Gaining Confidence from Others as a Public Speaker

There are some amazing public speakers on this planet and you can learn from all of them.

Gaining confidence from others can help you believe that you can do it too.

We’re all human and nobody was born a public speaker, somewhere along the way they had to practice, learn and improve.

I personally like to watch TED talks to see other speakers’ delivery styles, techniques, and content. This helps me gain confidence by learning from others.

This is actually something I talk about in my “Build Unstoppable Confidence” workshop.

Imagine the first time you jumped into a swimming pool, or learned to ride a bike. When you saw someone else do it you knew that it was possible.

It’s the same principle with public speaking, gain confidence from wherever and whoever to help you on your journey.

My 3 Tips Before Public Speaking

Look and Feel the Part

Personal stylist Sian Clarke talks about the importance of looking and feeling the part to help us with our confidence.

The clothes we wear can empower us, encourage us and make us feel unstoppable.

When we feel comfortable in the clothes we wear, we can use this confidence to help us throughout our public speaking engagements.

For big events, I personally like to get a fresh haircut and wear a nice suit. This helps me feel empowered to deliver the best talk possible.

If I’m delivering a wellbeing workshop, my uniform gives me confidence. Wearing my business uniform helps to remind me that I’m a professional, as well as ensuring I feel like one too.

Practice and Prepare

This concept is simple, the more we practice, the more prepared we feel. This helps to increase our confidence.

When I first started delivering workshops, I used to practice in my living room, practice in front of a mirror and then ask a friend or family member if I could practice in front of them.

Repetition, repetition, repetition.

This might sound boring, but the more you practice, the easier it will become.

Getting In the Zone

Before any public speaking engagement I like to get in the zone.

This is where I mentally prepare my mind for what I’m about to do.

Whether it’s listening to a specific song to pump myself up, or doing some breathing exercise to calm my nerves, I do whatever I feel is best at the time to get in the zone.

Sometimes I go over my speech in my head, sometimes I relax completely, I adapt to different methods depending on the environment and the talk I’m about to deliver.

Just like most people, I still feel nervous just before I get up to speak.

However, once I start, I’m in the zone and my nerves have vanished.

Public Speaking Techniques I Find Useful

Use Body language

According to The University of Texas approximately 55% of communication is nonverbal.

This means that your body language has a massive impact on the way that you deliver any kind of public speaking.

I find it useful to move my hands as I speak. This helps keep people engaged and means they’re watching an animated version of me.

Avoid putting your hands in your pocket or crossing your arms, this can make you appear nervous. Even if you are nervous it’s important to exude confidence.

Avoid Eye Contact

Looking directly into an audience member’s eye when speaking can sometimes be distracting and off-putting.

Eye contact is a great way to engage people when you’re more comfortable doing so, but initially, this may throw you off.

I often tend to look around the room, at objects or whatever is available that helps me to avoid looking into someone’s eyes.

This technique works well for me but it’s important for you to experiment and see what works best for you.

When I deliver workshops, eye contact is a must. It helps people to connect and engage in my sessions but being able to do this has come with experience.

Use Tone of Voice

I’m a firm believer of “it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it”.

I could say the same thing in a variety of ways and it mean completely different things each time.

Imagine this; you tell me that you have your first speaking engagement and I respond with the word “Really”. I could say this in a range of ways. Excited, disapproving, sarcastic, nonbelieving, you get the point.

Same word, a variety of different meanings.

This is why your tone of voice needs to match the story you are telling while public speaking.

This may be difficult to deliver on initially, but the more you do it, the easier it will become.

Connect Emotionally

When we draw on emotion throughout our speaking engagements, it helps to establish an emotional connection with our audience.

In my workshops and speaking engagements I use my personal and relatable experiences to help people truly relate and connect.

I consciously leverage the power of emotion, drawing upon my own vulnerabilities and experiences.

These genuine moments of vulnerability help to create an atmosphere of authenticity and openness, enabling individuals to not only empathise but also feel inspired and motivated to embrace their own journeys.

Public speaking is most definitely one of the best skills I’ve learned over the years.

Remember, the goal is not to substitute night-time sleep but to supplement it and give yourself a little energy boost to power through the rest of the day!

In our noisy, bustling world, there’s something profoundly powerful about the practice of silence.

Far from being empty or void, silence is filled with potential.

It encourages reflection, fosters creativity, and provides a reprieve from the constant barrage of information we face daily.

When we intentionally carve out periods of silence, we give our minds the opportunity to unwind, declutter, and refocus, making us more productive in the long run.

This habit involves pouring out all your thoughts, ideas, worries, and to-dos onto a piece of paper or a digital document.

It’s like a spring cleaning for your mind, clearing mental clutter, reducing stress, and helping you focus on what truly matters.

When your mind is less cluttered, you can process information better and become more productive.

How to get started: Grab a notebook or open a new document on your computer.

Set aside 10-15 minutes each day for this activity – it could be in the morning, during lunch, or before bed.

Write down everything that comes to your mind.

It could be a chore you need to do, an idea for a project, a worry that’s been nagging you, or even a random thought.

Don’t worry about organising or making sense of them right now, the aim is just to get them out of your head.

Once you’re done, you’ll likely feel a sense of relief.

How to get started: Find a patch of grass, a sandy beach, or a dirt path near you. Kick off your shoes and go for a barefoot walk.

Feel the textures beneath your feet, the coolness of the grass, the warmth of the sand, the ruggedness of the soil.

Start with just a few minutes a day, gradually increasing the time as you feel comfortable.

If you live in a city and don’t have easy access to natural spaces, consider investing in an earthing mat.

How Long Does It Typically Take to Form a New Productivity-Boosting Habit?

When you’re trying to build a new habit, you might wonder, “How long will it take until this becomes second nature?”

You may have heard it takes 21 days, but that’s not the whole story. This common belief is a bit of a simplification and can often lead to unrealistic expectations.

In reality, the time it takes to form a habit can vary significantly from person to person and depends heavily on the complexity of the habit and the person’s existing routine.

A study from University College London found that, on average, it takes about 66 days for a habit to become automatic.

But, even in this study, there was a lot of variation, with habits taking anywhere from 18 to 254 days to form.

The key takeaway? Don’t get hung up on a specific timeline.

Focus on consistency and commitment, not the clock. Some days will be easier than others, and that’s okay.

The important thing is to keep going. Building habits is more of a marathon than a sprint. It’s all about slow and steady progress towards a more productive you.

By doing so, they create a space free from digital distractions, providing room for reflection, creativity, and deep work.

Incorporating a regular digital detox into your routine could enhance your mental health, increase productivity, and improve personal relationships.

This isn’t about getting the typical 8-hour block though, we’re delving into the unusual practice of polyphasic sleep.

Polyphasic sleep involves breaking up sleep into several shorter periods throughout the day, instead of having one long nightly sleep.

Historical figures like Leonardo da Vinci and Nikola Tesla are said to have followed this sleep pattern to maximize their waking hours.

While this method might seem extreme and isn’t recommended for everyone, those who adapt to it claim to experience heightened productivity and more time in their day.

However, it’s important to remember that good sleep hygiene and getting enough rest is crucial for our health.

Habits provide structure to our daily lives. This can enhance our productivity by establishing routines that compartmentalize our activities and manage our time effectively.

Psychological Wellbeing

Positive habits like regular exercise, a balanced diet, or meditation can contribute to our overall well-being. A healthier mental state often equates to better performance in personal and professional realms.

The process of forming new habits cultivates resilience. It often involves overcoming challenges and stepping out of our comfort zones, both of which are crucial skills for achieving success.

The media mogul starts her day with a meditation session, allowing her to focus her mind and prepare for the day ahead.

She also maintains a gratitude journal, jotting down five things she’s thankful for each day.

Mark Zuckerberg

The Facebook founder is known for his habit of setting and following through with yearly personal challenges, such as learning Mandarin or only eating meat he had hunted himself.
