Employee wellbeing games in the workplace are a great way to unite colleagues and focus on the most important aspect of our lives: health and wellbeing.

In this blog, we’ll share 10 wellbeing games that all employees can take part in.

Whether during a team meeting, team away day, or something else, these games can help bring a smile and moment of relaxation to all involved.

As a wellbeing workshop facilitator, I’ve seen first-hand how impactful taking a moment to focus on wellbeing can be for employees worldwide.

10 Fun Wellbeing Games for the Workplace

These 10 workplace wellbeing games are designed to bring moments of joy, happiness, relaxation and encourage a collaborative workplace culture.

1. The Gratitude Game

When was the last time employees took a moment to think about what they’re grateful for within their workplace?

This game creates the space and time for colleagues to build a sense of appreciation towards each other and their working environment.

Gratitude has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and overall health.

Here’s how the game works:

All employees must write on a piece of paper one thing they are grateful for within their life or workplace.

Once this has been written down, the pieces of paper must be folded so nobody can see what each person has written down.

These pieces of paper must now be put into a hat, bowl, or something similar and mixed up.

Then, going around the room, one by one, each person picks one of the pieces of paper out. (Hopefully not their own)

Going clockwise, each person will read what it says on the paper.

The team will then guess who wrote what was on the piece of paper.

The person who wrote it can remain silent if they choose to or admit it is them, it’s up to your team.

Go around the room one by one and listen to the beautiful moments of gratitude expressed by colleagues.

This heart-warming wellbeing will help to bring a moment of appreciation and gratefulness to any working environment.

Alternatively, why not hire an expert to run a “Harnessing Gratitude Workshop” to bring your colleagues together and showcase the power of being grateful.

2. Wellbeing Trivia

Most individuals have played some form of trivia game but this is with a twist.

Rather than general questions about sport, TV or general knowledge, these questions are specifically about health and wellbeing.

These questions will highlight the importance of our wellbeing and get colleagues thinking more about their health.

Here’s how it works:

Start by organising employees into teams.

This could be groups of three or four, or you could decide to have only two teams.

Find whatever works best for your attendee size.

If there are lots of employees, have enough groups to allow each employee to get involved.

If there are only a few employees, perhaps two or three groups would be better.

Then we need to nominate a question master.

This is the person who reads out the questions to the group.

After all questions have been read, each group must swap their answers with another group.

They will then mark them for correct or incorrect answers as the question master reads out the questions again, as well as the answers.

The winning team is the one with the highest score.

3. The Wellness Game

This game involves setting a health goal for colleagues to achieve over a week, month, or set period.

When individuals are healthier, they are typically happier, more motivated, and more productive.

Think about the last time you felt your healthiest.

What was the result of this?

Hopefully, you felt amazing.

Well, why not challenge your colleagues to feel amazing too?

Here’s how it works:

Create a wellness challenge of your choice.

Our linked blog has a list of 10 challenges.

Once you’ve decided on your challenge, work out how you and your colleagues are going to monitor it.

For example, if you are taking on the two-litre challenge, create a tick box sheet for employees to sign once they’ve completed their two litres for the day.

Next, decide how long this challenge will last.

Agree with your team how long you’re going to track this for.

A week, month, year?

Find a suitable and realistic timeframe for your workplace.

Then, set a finish date where colleagues will come together to see who has stayed the most consistent throughout the challenge.

If budget permits, offer prizes for the top three, or even a prize to the whole team for taking part.

Whether it be a fun team away day or a day of on-site chair massage.

Find what works best for your workplace.

4. The Positivity Game

There’s tremendous power in the process of positive thinking.

When individuals express positivity, they are more resilient, optimistic, and less likely to experience stress.

The positivity game is a great way to encourage a brighter outlook within any workplace.

This can improve workplace culture, team collaboration, and more!

Here’s how it works:

Get employees to write down three positive things that have happened to them this week and one negative thing within the workplace.

Get each employee to share their positive points one by one.

Then ask employees to share their negative experiences.

When one person has shared a negative experience, ask colleagues in the room to help reframe that experience into a positive one.

Then go around the room one by one.

For example: A colleague may say they had a tough meeting with a client and it upset them.

First, express empathy in understanding why it would upset them, then work together to find what lessons were learned and what positives can be taken from it.

In this example, the tough meeting will have prepared the individual to be able to handle tough meetings better in the future.

It may also have taught them about the client’s standards so they know to deliver their best work next time.

Work on things that are relevant to your workplace.

At the end of the meeting, get all employees to share one positive thing they have taken from the meeting.

This will help the meeting to finish on a high.

5. The Stress Ball Game

To play this game, there will need to be one stress ball in the room the colleagues can throw to each other.

This game is designed to help alleviate workplace stress and allow employees to express themselves in a safe space.

The aim is to discuss a stressor and express how they will overcome this stress if it happens again.

Here’s how it works:

One person starts with the stress ball and expresses something that has stressed them out that month.

During their explanation, they squeeze the stress ball to help get out their frustration.

Once they have explained their stressor, they will explain how they will better cope with this the next time it occurs.

If they are unable to think of coping methods, they will ask their colleagues for suggestions.

To help stay on track, each person will be allocated a set time depending on attendee numbers and the length of the meeting.

E.g. if there are 6 people in a 1-hour meeting, then each person gets 10 minutes.

After the first person has gone through their stressor, they gently throw the ball to one of their colleagues to go next.

This is a great method to help employees reduce stress and feel supported by their colleagues.

If your workplace would like more proven frameworks to help reduce stress, check out our “Coping with Stress Wellbeing Workshop”.

6. Wellbeing Bingo

Bingo can be a fun game in any environment but what about wellbeing bingo?

Instead of using numbers, why not use wellbeing topics or facts?

This game adds an element of luck and friendly competition among colleagues and is easy to lay and implement.

Here’s how it works:

Everyone has a bingo card. (Use our free Bingo Card Generator below)

Employees can access this web page using a laptop, desktop or phone.

Get each employee to scroll down to the bingo card and generate a new card.

Create a bingo master, someone who will press “Pick a random wellbeing tip”.

Each time this is pressed, the “bingo master” will say what it is and individuals will click the answer if they have it on their card.

This will the mark it on their card.

The first person to get 5 in a row, is the winner.

7. The Kindness Game

In a world that can be harsh and difficult at times, it costs nothing to be kind.

Kindness helps to make someone’s day, which can in turn make the giver of kindness also feel happy.

This game gives colleagues the challenge and opportunity to be kind.

Here’s how it works:

Use our tool below to find an appropriate act of kindness.

Find one act of kindness for each person.

Then, give each individual the rest of the day to complete that act of kindness.

Report back to each other and explain the impact each act of kindness had within the workplace.

This game will help to contribute to a kind and caring workforce.

Try our free act of kindness generator below!

8. The Photo Game

This game is designed to bring out laughter and joy among colleagues.

Sharing photos can help to get colleagues to know each other better, boost relationships, and enhance team morale.

The photo game creates a moment of fun that can help to boost the mood among team members.

Here’s how it works:

Before organising a team meeting or gathering, ask each individual to bring in a photo from their childhood, teenage years, or a happy memory.

All photos are shared around between individuals for everyone to see.

Each person must now guess what photo belongs to who.

The winner is the person who guessed the most correctly.

Once all has been revealed.

Each person can take a moment to explain why they decided to bring this photo in and what it means to them.

This can evoke a heart-warming moment among colleagues to connect and learn more about each other.

9. The Laughing Game

Why not evoke some laughter in your workplace to create some office giggles?

Laughter is an emotion that can help support the wellbeing of anyone.

Laughter can reduce stress, bring joy and build bonds.

Taking a moment out of the day in your workplace to place this came could have a tremendous impact.

Here’s how it works:

Standing in a circle each person says the word ha.

Once everyone has completed the word ha, the next round is for each person to say ha ha.

The number of “ha’s” keep increasing each round.

When the first person laughs, they are now out.

The game continues until there is only one winner.

This game will bring joy to any workplace and is a silly moment of fun that all colleagues will remember.

10. The Compliment Chain

Complimenting someone can make them feel happy, seen, and important.

The compliment chain provides the opportunity for colleagues to say something nice to each other.

These kind words will not only make individuals feel happy but also create team unity.

Genuine compliments improve relationships, motivate individuals, boost self-esteem, boost confidence, and more!

Here’s how it works:

Each person says a compliment to the person on their left.

Once everyone has completed the first round we start again.

This time, each person says a compliment to the person on their right.

Lastly, each person says a compliment to a person of their choice, making sure not to compliment the same person twice.

Not sure of what compliments to say?

The Benefits of Wellbeing Games at Work

Incorporating wellbeing games into the workplace brings many benefits that can truly transform the work environment.

From my experience, these activities do wonders in reducing stress and boosting overall morale.

I’ve seen first-hand how engaging in fun, light-hearted games helps employees unwind and reconnect with their colleagues on a personal level.

It creates a sense of togetherness and builds stronger team bonds, making team collaboration more natural and enjoyable.

Moreover, these games encourage healthy habits, like taking breaks to move around or doing things to reduce stress, which can significantly improve physical and mental health.

The productivity boost is also remarkable.

When employees take time to recharge with a quick game or activity, they return to their work with renewed energy and creativity.

Overall, incorporating wellbeing games into the workplace not only makes for happier employees but also creates a more vibrant and productive work environment.

If you’re reading this, you probably understand the importance of weekly team meetings.

But let’s face it, the term “weekly team meeting” often evokes a collective groan.

Why? Because most of us have sat through meetings that feel like a waste of time.

However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

In this blog, we’ll explore how to breathe new life into your weekly team meetings.

We’ll cover what to discuss, how to keep things fresh, and why these meetings are a great for company success.

3 Things to Cover in Weekly Team Meetings

Alright, let’s get down to business. You’ve got a meeting to run, and you want it to be a hit. Here are three essential topics that should be on your agenda every week.

1. Progress Updates

First up, progress updates.

This is the time for team members to share what they’ve accomplished since the last meeting.

It’s not just about ticking off tasks, it’s about celebrating small wins and understanding how each piece contributes to the bigger picture.

Celebrate achievements to remind colleagues they’re doing a great job.

2. Roadblocks and Challenges

No project is without its hurdles.

This is the space to bring them up.

Whether it’s a technical glitch or a resource constraint, discussing challenges openly allows the team to brainstorm solutions together.

Remember, two heads are better than one.

3. Goals for the Upcoming Week

Lastly, set the stage for the week ahead.

What are the priorities?

What needs to be accomplished to stay on track?

Setting clear goals gives your team a roadmap and helps everyone leave the meeting with a sense of direction.

Setting clear goals also helps to keep everyone accountable.

5 Ideas for Keeping Weekly Team Meetings Fresh

So, you’ve got the basics down. Your meetings are functional, but are they fun?

Are they something your team looks forward to?

If the answer is “not really,” then it’s time to spice things up.

Here are some ideas to keep your weekly team meetings fresh and engaging.

1. Rotate the Facilitator

Let different team members take turns running the meeting.

This brings in new perspectives and keeps the format from getting stale.

Plus, it’s a great way for junior team members to practice leadership skills.

2. Add a Wellbeing Element

Here’s where things get interesting.

How about inviting a wellbeing speaker to your meeting once a month?

They could deliver interactive workshops on stress management, Gratitude, health and more!

It’s a win-win: your team learns valuable skills, and the meetings become something to look forward to.

Check out our blog on “Fun wellbeing activities for team meetings

3. Use Interactive Tools

Ditch the monotonous PowerPoint slides and bring in interactive tools.

Think polls, quizzes, or even quick team-building games.

These not only make your meetings more engaging but also encourage participation.

4. Spotlight Segment

Allocate a few minutes for a “spotlight” segment where team members can share something personal or professional that they’re proud of.

It could be a completed project, a hobby, or even a recent holiday.

This adds a human element to your meetings.

5. Time for Feedback

End your meetings with a quick round of feedback.

What went well?

What could be improved?

This keeps your meetings dynamic and allows for continuous improvement.

Making Weekly Team Meetings Effective

You’ve got the agenda and some fun elements in place.

But how do you ensure that your meetings are not just enjoyable but also effective?

After all, the end goal is to facilitate better communication, foster teamwork, and drive project success.

Here are some tips to make your weekly team meetings truly effective.

Stick to the Agenda

It sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many meetings veer off course.

An agenda isn’t just a list, it’s your meeting’s backbone.

Stick to it, and you’ll keep your meeting focused and efficient.

meeting agenda written on a notepad

Time Management

Allocate specific time slots for each agenda item and stick to them.

Running over time not only disrupts everyone’s schedule but also leads to diminishing attention spans.

Encourage Participation

An effective meeting is a two-way street.

Encourage team members to speak up, ask questions, and share opinions.

The more engaged your team is, the more productive the meeting will be.

Action Items and Accountability

End each meeting by summarising the action items, who is responsible for what, and by when.

This creates accountability and ensures that tasks don’t fall through the cracks.

Follow-Up

Don’t just close the meeting and forget about it.

Send out a summary email highlighting the key points discussed, action items, and deadlines.

This serves as a reference and keeps everyone aligned.

Evaluate and Adapt

After a few meetings, take a step back to evaluate.

Are the meetings achieving their objectives?

Are team members more engaged?

Use this feedback to continuously adapt and improve your meeting structure.

By implementing these strategies, you’re not just holding a meeting, you’re steering a productive, collaborative, and effective conversation.

And that’s what meetings should be all about.

The Benefits of Weekly Team Meetings

So, you might be wondering, “Why all this fuss about weekly team meetings?”

Well, when done right, these gatherings offer a range of benefits that go beyond just ticking off a corporate checkbox.

Let’s look at some of the key benefits of team meetings:

Improved Communication

The most obvious benefit, but also the most crucial.

Weekly meetings provide a structured platform for team members to communicate openly.

This helps in clearing misunderstandings and aligning everyone towards common goals.

Team Cohesion

When team members meet regularly, they develop a sense of unity and camaraderie.

This fosters a collaborative environment where people are more willing to work together and help each other out.

Accountability

When you discuss progress and set goals in a public forum, it creates a sense of accountability.

No one wants to be the person who didn’t meet their targets.

This subtle peer pressure can be a powerful motivator.

Problem-Solving

Two heads are better than one, and in a team meeting, you have multiple heads tackling issues together.

This collective problem-solving can lead to more creative and effective solutions.

problem-solving-written-on-a-chalk-board

Skill Sharing

In a diverse team, each member brings unique skills to the table.

Weekly meetings offer an opportunity for skill sharing and cross-training, which can be invaluable for team growth and project success.

Real-Time Feedback

Instead of waiting for an annual review, team meetings provide an avenue for real-time feedback.

This allows for quick course corrections and continuous improvement.

Increased Transparency

Regular meetings create a culture of transparency. Team members are more aware of what’s happening in the project, which in turn builds trust and openness.

Weekly team meetings are not just a formality.

They’re a vital tool for building a strong, cohesive, and high-performing team.

Happy staff in a team meeting

The Purpose of Weekly Team Meetings

You might think the benefits we just discussed are also the purpose of weekly team meetings.

While they’re closely related, there’s a subtle difference.

The purpose is the “why” — the core reasons these meetings exist in the first place.

Let’s break it down.

Alignment

The primary purpose of any team meeting is alignment.

With everyone juggling multiple tasks and projects, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture.

Weekly meetings serve as a touchpoint to ensure that everyone is aligned with the team’s objectives and company goals.

Information Sharing

In today’s fast-paced work environment, things change quickly.

New client requirements, updates in company policy, or even shifts in market trends can impact your work.

The weekly meeting is a forum for sharing this critical information in a timely manner.

Decision-Making

Meetings are where key decisions are often made.

Whether it’s choosing a project direction or solving a pressing issue, the meeting serves as a democratic space where voices are heard, and decisions are made collectively.

Resource Allocation

Who is doing what?

Do we have the resources to take on a new project?

These questions are crucial for project management and are best addressed in a team meeting to avoid any overlaps or bottlenecks.

Building Team Culture

Yes, culture.

The way meetings are conducted reflects the team’s culture.

Is it hierarchical or collaborative?

Is innovation encouraged?

Weekly meetings can serve as a microcosm of your team’s culture, reinforcing values and norms.

The next time you’re about to hit “send” on that meeting invite, take a moment to consider these core purposes.

They’ll help you stay focused on what truly matters and make your meetings more meaningful.

Happy-and-satisfied-employees-raising-their-hands-in-the-air

How Long Should a Weekly Team Meeting Be?

The age-old question: how long is too long when it comes to meetings?

We’ve all been in those never-ending sessions that seem to drag on forever.

So, what’s the sweet spot? Let’s explore.

The 30-Minute Rule

For most teams, a 30-minute meeting is often sufficient to cover progress updates, roadblocks, and plans for the upcoming week.

It’s short enough to maintain focus but long enough to delve into details.

The Complexity Factor

However, the ideal length can vary depending on the complexity of the project or the topics to be discussed.

If you’re in the middle of a major project or facing significant challenges, extending the meeting to 45 minutes or even an hour might be necessary.

Agenda-Driven Timing

The best way to determine the length is to look at your agenda.

Estimate how much time each item will take and plan accordingly.

And remember, sticking to the agenda is key to managing time effectively.

Time for Interaction

Don’t forget to allocate time for team interaction.

Whether it’s a quick ice-breaker or a few minutes for open discussion, this time is crucial for team cohesion and can make meetings more enjoyable.

Flexibility is Key

Lastly, be flexible.

If you find that you’re consistently running over time, it might be a sign that you need to extend the standard meeting length.

On the flip side, if you’re wrapping up early, consider shortening future meetings.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

The ideal meeting length depends on various factors like the project stage, complexity, and team dynamics.

But as a general rule of thumb, aim to keep it as short as possible while still achieving your meeting objectives.

colleagues-in-a-meeting-thinking

Weekly team meetings are more than just a routine obligation, they’re a golden opportunity.

An opportunity to align goals, solve problems, and most importantly, to connect as a team.

By keeping your meetings fresh, focused, and purpose-driven, you’re setting the stage for not just individual success, but for the collective success of your team and your company.

So go ahead, take these tips and transform your weekly team meetings into a powerful tool for change.

Here’s to more productive, engaging, and meaningful meetings ahead!

No successful workplace wants their employees to be unhappy at work but sadly it’s a reality for millions of people across the world.

Employee Unhappiness affects many things in the workplace including productivity, retention, and workplace culture.

Understanding the reasons behind employee unhappiness is crucial for creating a positive and engaged work environment.

In this blog we’ll look at 10 reasons why employees are unhappy at work but most importantly, what can be done about it!

10 Reasons Why Employees Are Unhappy at Work!

1. Lack of Recognition

Sarah had been working at her company for five years.

She consistently delivered outstanding results.

Her projects were always on time and exceeded expectations.

Yet, she never received any acknowledgment.

One Friday afternoon, the team celebrated a minor milestone.

As usual, Sarah’s contributions went unnoticed.

She felt invisible.

Her hard work seemed pointless.

This lack of recognition slowly eroded her enthusiasm and motivation.

Employees who experience situations like this can often feel they are not valued or appreciated.

Without it, even the most dedicated workers, like Sarah, can lose their drive.

Solution

To prevent situations like this companies can implement a recognition program.

It could be through acknowledgment in meetings, or public appreciation in meetings.

Use recognition tools to allow employee to appreciate each other’s efforts.

Regularly highlighting individual and team achievements can help to create a culture of appreciation.

Employee workshops like “Harnessing Gratitude” create the space for employees to understand the importance of showing appreciation and gratitude.

2. Poor Management

John loved his job at first.

He was passionate and full of ideas.

But his manager, Mike, was never available.

Mike gave vague instructions and provided little guidance.

When John needed help, Mike was always too busy.

One day, John made a minor mistake on a project.

Instead of support, Mike blamed him in front of the team.

This left John feeling embarrassed and demoralised.

Mike had failed to notice any of John’s positive contributions, but instantly berated him over a mistake.

This caused John to lose enthusiasm and he decided to start looking for a new job.

Poor management is one of the biggest reasons employees are unhappy at work.

In fact, managers have as big of an impact on employee mental health as their therapist or partner.

Solution

Ensure managers are properly trained in communication, people management and conflict resolution.

Managers should be approachable and provide clear guidance for their teams.

Investing in leadership training ensures managers support and inspire their teams.

3. Limited Career Advancement

Emily had big dreams when she joined her company.

She was eager to learn and grow.

However, after three years, she found herself in the same position. Promotions were rare, and there were no opportunities for skill development.

She felt stuck.

One day, she saw a colleague leave for a better job elsewhere.

It made Emily wonder about her own future.

Without career advancement, her motivation dwindled, and she started looking for new opportunities.

Employees who encounter limited career advancement often feel stagnant and overlooked.

Without growth opportunities, even the most ambitious employees, like Emily, can lose enthusiasm and seek opportunities elsewhere.

Solution

Provide clear career paths of progression.

Offer regular training and development programs.

Encourage internal promotions and set up mentorship programs.

Help employees create habits that set them up for success.

Show employees that their growth is valued and supported within the company.

4. Work-Life Imbalance

Tom was once enthusiastic about his job.

However, long hours and constant pressure began to take a toll.

He missed family dinners and social events.

His health started to suffer due to stress and lack of sleep.

Tom felt like he was always working, with no time for himself.

One evening, as he worked late again, he realised he was burning out.

The imbalance between work and personal life was overwhelming, making him dread work each day.

Poor Work-life balance can lead to a range of issues.

It affects physical and mental health, reduces productivity, and increases absenteeism.

Employees may feel overwhelmed, causing their job satisfaction and overall performance to decline.

This imbalance also strains personal relationships, further impacting their health and wellbeing.

Solution

Encourage a healthy work-life balance.

Whether it’s through internal or initiatives or things like wellbeing workshops.

Offer flexible working hours and remote work options.

Promote regular breaks and time off work.

Create a culture that values personal time and wellbeing.

This helps employees like Tom to stay healthy and engaged.

5. Inadequate Salary

James was passionate about his role.

However, his salary barely covered his expenses.

He worked hard, but financial stress constantly weighed on him.

His frustration grew even bigger when he learned that his peers in similar roles earned more.

One day, James received a better salary offer from another company.

Feeling undervalued, he decided to leave instantly.

His departure was a major loss for his team, who valued his contributions.

They wished their company had compensated him fairly before it was too late.

One of the biggest reasons people leave their company is for a better salary elsewhere.

When employees do not feel they are being compensated for their work it can leave them unhappy, frustrated and ready to seek employment elsewhere.

Solution

Conduct regular salary reviews to ensure employees are fairly compensated.

Offer performance-based raises and bonuses.

Be transparent about pay scales and provide clear pathways for financial growth.

All of this can help to retain talented employees and show they are valued and fairly compensated.

6. Unchallenging Work

Anna started her job excited about the possibilities.

However, her tasks quickly became repetitive and mundane.

She felt her skills were being underutilized.

The lack of challenging work made her feel bored and disengaged. Anna’s enthusiasm faded, and her productivity declined.

One day, she decided to speak to her manager about her concerns. Unfortunately, no changes were made, and Anna eventually sought more stimulating work elsewhere.

Employees who are not engaged in their work are more likely to leave.

Monotonous tasks can often make employees unhappy, unfulfilled, and disengaged.

Without stimulating work, employees can lose their drive and seek more challenging work elsewhere.

Solution

Provide diverse and challenging tasks.

Offer opportunities for skill development and creative projects.

Rotate responsibilities to keep work interesting.

Provide business development opportunities.

Engaging work helps to keep employees motivated and productive.

7. Toxic Work Environment

Lily used to love her job.

However, over time, the work environment became toxic.

Gossip, favouritism, and negative attitudes were rampant.

Conflicts were poorly managed, creating tension and daily stress.

Lily felt unhappy and anxious every day, dreading going to work.

One day, a heated argument broke out in the office which didn’t get resolved.

It was the last straw for Lily.

She realised her mental health was suffering and decided she could not continue to work in such a toxic environment.

Toxic work environments can ruin any business.

When employees feel they are in a toxic workplace, it makes them unhappy, causes stress, and can negatively impact their daily job role.

Solution

Create a positive work culture and address conflicts promptly and fairly.

Promote open communication and respect among team members.

A healthy work environment helps employees to feel safe and cared for.

happy staff because of their workplace wellbeing culture

8. Poor Work Conditions

Mark’s office had outdated equipment and inadequate lighting.

The cramped space and poor ventilation made it uncomfortable to work in.

Noise levels were high, causing constant distractions.

These conditions took a toll on Mark’s health and productivity.

He often left work feeling unhappy, exhausted and frustrated.

One day, he developed severe back pain due to his uncomfortable office chair.

This was a turning point for Mark.

Realising the company wouldn’t improve conditions, he decided to find a job that took care of the environment employees worked in.

Poor work conditions can contribute to employees continuously feeling unhappy at work.

Who wants to go to a workplace that doesn’t create comfortable working conditions.

Supporting good work conditions can help employees to feel comfortable throughout their working day.

Solution

Invest in ergonomic furniture and modern equipment where possible.

Ensure the workplace is clean, well-lit, and properly ventilated.

Reduce noise levels and provide quiet spaces for focused work.

Good work conditions keep employees happy, healthy and productive.

9. Poor Communication

Jane was enthusiastic about her project, but unclear instructions from her manager caused confusion.

Important information was often lost, leading to mistakes and frustration.

The team rarely held meetings, and when they did, they were unorganised and ineffective.

Jane felt disconnected and uncertain about her role.

One day, a miscommunication resulted in a major error.

Jane realised that poor communication was impacting her performance and making her frustrated and unhappy.

Clear communication is crucial in any working environment.

Poor communication can result in business errors, confusion and unhappy employees.

Solution

Use clear, concise communication channels.

Encourage open dialogue and feedback between staff.

Create communication processes that are easy for everyone to follow and understand.

Effective communication ensures that employees feel informed and valued.

10. Unclear Job Expectations

Carlos started his new job with enthusiasm, but he quickly became confused about his responsibilities.

His manager provided vague instructions and never outlined clear goals.

Carlos often felt lost, and unsure if he was meeting expectations.

This uncertainty led to stress and decreased confidence in his work.

One day, a critical project was delayed due to this lack of clarity. Carlos realised that without clear job expectations, he couldn’t perform at his best.

He tried to communicate this with management but they failed to provide the necessary guidance.

Without clear guidance, how do employers expect employees to work effectively?

Employees with unclear job expectations often feel unhappy, confused, and stressed.

Solution

Clearly define roles and responsibilities.

Set specific, achievable goals and provide regular feedback.

Ensure employees understand what is expected of them.

Clear job expectations help employees like Carlos feel confident and focused.

What are the Signs of Unhappy Employees?

Unhappy employees often show signs such as decreased productivity and work quality.

They may have frequent absences and avoid team activities or meetings.

Unhappy employees can often have a continuous negative attitude that can impact others.

They may also complain regularly and rarely take initiative on new tasks.

High employee turnover rates can indicate that many employees are unhappy in the workplace.

Identifying these signs early allows for addressing the root causes and improving workplace morale.

Employee burnout

What are the Long-Term Effects of Ignoring Employee Unhappiness?

Ignoring employee unhappiness can lead to a range of significant long-term effects.

Productivity declines as disengaged employees contribute less effectively.

High employee turnover rates increase as dissatisfied employees leave, resulting in increased recruitment and training costs. (A problem no company want to continuously deal with)

The company’s reputation suffers, making it harder to attract the best employees.

Team dynamics deteriorate, leading to poor collaboration and communication.

Chronic dissatisfaction impacts employee mental health, causing stress and burnout.

Innovation dwindles as unhappy employees are less likely to contribute creative ideas.

Customer satisfaction decreases due to poor service from disengaged staff.

Ultimately, the company culture erodes, hindering growth and success.

Addressing employee happiness is crucial for maintaining a healthy, productive, and successful business environment.

The Man with the Happiest Workforce (Video)

Employees are often unhappy in their workplace because of we discussed in this blog.

Addressing these concerns is crucial to creating a positive work environment that employees want to be a part of.

By recognising and resolving these issues, companies can improve employee happiness, reduce employee turnover, and enhance overall productivity.

Investing in employee wellbeing not only benefits the workforce but also drives business success.

Prioritise your employees, and they will help your workplace thrive.

For many companies, the pandemic seemed like a lifetime ago, but its impact has drastically changed how many organisations work.

Whether it’s the shift to more remote teams, the implementation of flexible hours, or the adoption of new technologies, these changes have fundamentally altered the way we work.

In this blog, we will explore how employee data has evolved since the pandemic, examining shifts in productivity, job satisfaction, and overall employment trends.

We’ll look at 5 key areas that have changed since the pandemic and provide the resources to help do something about them.

As an organisation who delivers employee wellbeing services to help support companies, we found this data very interesting.

5 Employee Wellbeing Changes Since the Pandemic

According to employee benefits, wellbeing levels in companies have fallen from 73% to 66% since the pandemic.

We’ll look at 5 key areas that have seemed to change since covid-19.

1. Work-Life Balance

According to Aviva, more employees are attracted to their current role for the work-life balance, rather than the salary, since the pandemic.

It seems that employee priorities have now shifted.

Aviva also shared that nine out of ten employees said workplace benefits (other than salary) improve their overall happiness.

Nine out of ten employees also said they want to see improvements in their workplace benefits package over the next 12 months.

So, what can companies do to support this?

Allowing flexible working can be a great place to start.

With the ability to work from home, some employees dread the commute and many are often more productive at home.

Employers can also offer employee perks.

Whether it’s free health insurance, paid time off, employee wellbeing programs regular onsite massage, or other perks, these are factors many employees are prioritising since the pandemic.

2. Employee Support

According to a survey by people management nine out of ten employers think that employees need more wellbeing support post-covid.

They surveyed 500 HR decision-makers.

The results found that 86% believed staff require more health and wellbeing support since the pandemic.

A fifth also said they were worried about the physical health of staff.

This proved to be of concern, particularly with the ongoing difficulty getting GP appointments.

Whether through employee assistance programs, educational training, health and wellbeing resources, or other initiatives, companies must continue to support their people.

3. Workload

One of the biggest reasons for employee stress is excessive workload.

Highly stressed employees can lead to miserable people creating a bad workplace culture.

This can result in increased staff turnover, more stress for others, and a poor working environment.

According to Fortune, about 82% of employees are at risk of burnout this year, but only half of employers design work with wellbeing in mind.

Mercer’s Global Talent Trend also has some interesting data.

The report shows that 32% of people say that a workload that is too high or unsustainable is the reason for their lack of productivity.

If excessive workload is causing stress, burnout, and poor productivity, employers must take action before it’s too late.

Employers can find ways to make the workload more manageable.

This could be by providing training on managing time more effectively.

It could be hiring an extra pair of hands where possible.

Companies that do not support their staff will learn the hard way.

Workload among employees has seemed to be similar during and post-pandemic.

Although I’m sure this depends on the industry.

4. Employee Connection

Research from Gallup has shown that having a best friend at work has become more important since the start of the pandemic.

Even with the increase in remote and hybrid work, employees want to feel connected to their colleagues.

Data has shown that those who have a best friend at work are more likely to:

  • Engage customers and internal partners
  • Be more productive
  • Support a safe workplace
  • Innovate and share ideas
  • Have fun at work

Employee connection is a vital part of a healthy workplace.

Building relationships at work is not always easy for employees.

Companies can help support and facilitate this in a range of ways.

Whether it’s organising work socials, company events, team building workshops, employee resource groups, or other initiatives, helping to build employee connection can help to benefit any organisation.

5. Mental Health

The pandemic highlighted to us all just how important our health is, including our mental health.

However, research suggests that employee mental health challenges still remain after the pandemic.

According to the 2024 Voice of the Workplace report from Calm seven out of ten employees say their mental health has stayed the same or worsened in the past year.

The report also highlighted that 61% of people have felt down, depressed, or hopeless with eight out of ten employees saying they have struggled with nervousness, anxiousness, and stress.

Data like this highlights the importance of supporting employee mental health for any organisation.

As we reflect on the profound impacts of the pandemic on workplace dynamics, it’s evident that the path forward demands a renewed focus on employee wellbeing.

The insights from shifts in work-life balance, support systems, workload expectations, workplace connections, and mental health strategies highlight a transformative era in organisational culture.

For companies dedicated to navigating this new reality, the commitment to enhancing employee wellbeing is not just beneficial but essential for fostering a productive, loyal, and satisfied workforce.

At Loving Life, we take pride in helping companies support their employees.

Imagine walking into a room full of people and feeling a surge of self-assurance, ready to tackle any challenge that comes your way.

Now, picture that same confidence radiating through your team at work.

How much more could you and your colleagues achieve with high levels of confidence?

In my journey delivering employee workshops, I discovered that boosting employee confidence doesn’t just transform individual performance—it can transform entire workplaces.

In this blog, I’ll share the strategies that have helped numerous employees put together a strategy to help build their confidence.

Additional Tips When Building Employee Confidence

What is Employee Confidence?

Employee confidence is the belief and assurance employees have in their own abilities to perform their tasks effectively, contributing to the organisations goals.

It encompasses a sense of self-worth, competence, and trust in an individuals skills and decisions.

When employees are confident, they are more likely to take initiative, embrace challenges, and collaborate effectively with colleagues.

This confidence not only enhances individual performance but also helps to contribute to a positive and productive work environment.

The Importance of Employee Confidence

Employee confidence is important because it helps both the employees and the company they work for in many ways.

When workers feel confident in their job roles, they take charge, make good decisions, and try new ideas.

This makes the company more productive and forward thinking.

Confidence also creates a positive work environment where people talk openly, work well together, and trust each other.

This makes employees happier and less likely to leave their jobs.

Confident employees can handle daily challenges better and adapt to changes, keeping their performance high even when things get tough.

In the end, building employee confidence makes the whole team stronger and more motivated.

This is crucial for the company’s success in the long run.

Strategies to Boost Employee Confidence

As an employee workshop facilitator, I’m going to share two successful strategies to help build employee confidence and how to implement them.

Transferring Confidence

Whether we believe it or not, we’re all confident at something.

We’ve also all built confidence over time at something.

It could be something as simple as tying your shoe lace (you probably weren’t confident with this as a child).

Or it could be something else like riding a bike, making toast, or other daily tasks that individuals do without concern.

Confidence isn’t an overall thing.

We build confidence in specific things.

In this section, I’m going to share how some of the most confidently appearing individuals use this strategy to help them be more confident in other areas of their lives.

To understand this, we’re going to talk about Muhammed Ali.

Muhammed Ali is mostly known for his skills in the boxing ring but he appeared to be confident in everything he did.

He was so good at boxing that he was able to use this confidence and transfer it to other areas of his life.

He used to say “I am the greatest” because his boxing skills helped him transfer his confidence from inside the ring to outside the ring.

So how can employees take advantage of this?

First, help colleagues to identify the things that they are good at.

Help them to understand how they got good at those things.

It could be a marketeer who is really confident at design, but doesn’t feel confident to speak up in meetings.

Help them to understand that they’ve successfully built confidence in one area of their life, which means they can use it to help others.

However, to truly be able to transfer confidence to other areas of employee lives, you need to understand the exposure hierarchy, which I’ll come on to next.

Showing confidence

The Exposure Hierarchy

This is a method that we can implement to any area of our lives to build confidence.

With this method, employees can work towards feeling more confident in whatever it is they want to build confidence in.

Let’s use the example of the marketeer not feeling confident to speak up in meetings.

Here’s how it works!

At each meeting, the marketeer should be encouraged to contribute something small.

It must start with something very small.

This should be discussed with them.

It could be reading a short sentence, or saying one word that contributes to the meeting.

The aim is, the marketeer says something one week, achieves success, and realises that everything went okay.

Then the following week, they can build on it.

They achieve success again and continue to contribute gradually each meeting.

The key point is to make this process gradual enough that the employee feels comfortable to do so.

As a workshop facilitator, let me explain how I’ve used this exact method to build confidence delivering workshops.

So much so, that I now deliver an employee workshop called “Build Unstoppable Confidence

Here’s how I’ve successfully used the exposure hierarchy to build confidence.

When I first started delivering workshops in 2017, I was extremely nervous.

I lacked confidence because I simply hadn’t exposed myself enough times delivering them.

So I created a gradual process to help me build my confidence.

The first step was to practice these workshops in front of the mirror on my own.

I’d do this continuously until I felt comfortable enough with what I was delivering.

Then, I’d practice in front of one willing participant.

This allowed me to get feedback and build confidence.

I did this, achieved success and it slowly allowed me to grow in confidence.

Fast forward 7 + years and I’m now super confident in what I do because I’ve gradually exposed myself to situations that have allowed me to build confidence.

The truth is, that building confidence can take time.

It’s not going to happen overnight.

So below are some additional methods that can help support building employee confidence.

Additional Tips When Building Employee Confidence

While helping employees build their confidence there are additional methods that you can use to help ensure success!

Be Empathetic

Not everyone moves at the same speed.

Some will move slower than others and may take longer to build confidence in certain areas.

Show empathy and understanding when working with these employees.

Encourage and support them to build their confidence as gradually as necessary.

If they’re rushed, this can negatively impact their confidence building, resulting in more fear and anxiety.

Show these employees that you’re there to help them and not hinder them.

Provide Relevant Training

Whatever you want employees to build confidence in, provide training on it.

If you want to help them build their communication skills, arrange relevant training.

At Loving Life, we have a Build Unstoppable Confidence Workshop that can help employees create a plan to boost their confidence.

employee-workshop

Accountability

Help employees stay on track by keeping them accountable.

Communicate clear and easy to understand processes.

Help them to set targets that you support and hold them accountable with.

Ensure these targets are agreed by them and they feel that they are fair.

Offer Constructive Feedback

As employees are building their confidence provide them with constructive feedback.

Ensure your feedback comes across as constructive and not criticism.

Share the things that they are doing well and the things that they can improve on.

If there are areas for improvement, provide feedback that gives them a clear understanding of how to improve.

Feedback should be progressive and easy to understand.

feedback-written-as-a-spider-diagram-with-words-coming-from-it

Celebrate Success

When employees build their confidence in particular areas, celebrate it.

This will help to continue boosting their confidence.

Celebrating their success could be in a range of different ways.

This blog shares methods on how to celebrate workplace milestones.

Overall, building employee confidence involves many elements.

Employers need to help support them in as many ways as possible.

If you’d like help supporting your employees.

Get in touch to support your most valuable asset, your people!

But good luck and I wish you the best in helping your colleagues to thrive!

As a leader, the fate of your company’s future and the wellbeing of your employees rest in your hands.

Workplaces that do not create a positive culture have higher staff turnover, lower employee engagement, more absenteeism, less trust, and more!

All of which contribute to lower profits.

In this article we’re going to look at 4 factors that help to create a culture that employees love being a part of.

The Danger of Ignoring Workplace Culture (Video)

4 Factors that Create an Awesome Workplace Culture

Creating an awesome workplace isn’t going to be easy but with these 4 factors leaders and employers can take steps to create an awesome company culture everyone loves.

1. Fairness and Equality

Embedding a culture of fairness and equality is essential to create an awesome workplace.

These principles are vital to building an environment where employees feel valued and respected.

Fairness in the workplace is fundamentally about respecting each individual in the business.

It means creating a space where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed regardless of their background or personal characteristics.

Ensuring fairness and equality helps to reduce workplace conflicts.

This can reduce negative vibes and lower employee turnover and absenteeism.

When people feel they are treated fairly, they are more likely to engage positively with their work and colleagues.

According to a survey by Gartner, 82% of employees report that working environments lack fairness.

Making sure your workplace is fair is not only morally right, but also a smart business decision.

A culture where employees feel appreciated and secure can contribute to stronger company loyalty, higher productivity, and more!

manager supporting her employee in a team meeting

2. Leadership and Trust

Trust is important in any workplace culture.

Without trust, employees can’t work effectively or collaborate efficiently.

It’s important for employees to feel like senior management trusts them.

If employees don’t feel trusted it can negatively impact how they feel within their working environment.

According to Personio, 26% of employees in the UK do not trust their CEO to be open and honest and 24% don’t trust their senior leadership either.

Effective leadership allows transparency, integrity, and consistency.

Leaders who naturally demonstrate these qualities can help to create a positive workplace culture.

When employees trust their leaders they are more likely to feel secure in their job role.

This can help to increase productivity and boost morale.

3. Employee Health and Wellbeing

Our health and wellbeing are the most important part of our life.

Without positive health and wellbeing, we can’t do what is necessary in our professional or personal lives.

Supporting employee health and wellbeing is a vital part of creating a great workplace culture.

Initiatives that focus on employee wellbeing can lead to improved mental health, reduced stress, improved mood, and more.

These are all directly correlated with increased productivity, engagement, and a workplace people love being a part of.

When companies invest in employee health and wellbeing services they not only support their employees but cultivate a culture where employees thrive.

Workshops on supporting wellbeing, reducing stress, and improving health are great ways companies can get started.

Organising workshops are not only a great way to educate staff on new topics but also bring colleagues together in a more relaxed setting.

This can help to build colleague relationships, boost collaboration, and more!

4. Employee Recognition

Each and every one of us likes to be appreciated and recognised.

Even in the workplace.

Employees who feel recognised can be more engaged and present.

This makes them feel more valued and connected to the company’s mission.

One of the biggest contributing factors for employees leaving jobs is lack of recognition.

According to data from Quantum Workplace, one in two employees would like more recognition for their work.

They also state that organisations with recognition programs in place have 28.6% lower frustration levels than those without.

Recognition has also been shown to increase productivity, build a positive workplace, improve employee retention, and more!

According to ProofHub, 69% of employees would work harder if they felt their efforts were better appreciated.

Creating an employee recognition program can have many elements.

It should include public appreciation.

Things like praise during company meetings or posts on the company intranet.

It should also include private appreciation.

Whether it’s praise during a one-to-one meeting or a small gift of appreciation and acknowledgment.

A well-thought-out and implemented recognition program can be another factor in creating an awesome place to work.

Additional Methods to Create an Awesome Workplace Culture

Sometimes it’s great to think outside of the box when supporting employees.

What works in one organisation might not be as successful in another.

Here are some additional methods that could help you to create an awesome workplace.

On-site massage

On-site massages might seem like a luxury, but they offer a profound boost to workplace culture.

This rejuvenating service is more than just a moment of relaxation; it signals to employees that their wellbeing is a top priority.

Regular massage sessions can reduce stress, alleviate muscle tension from desk jobs, and refresh the mind.

The result?

A happier, healthier team ready to tackle challenges with renewed energy and a positive outlook.

By incorporating such thoughtful wellness initiatives, companies not only enhance individual wellbeing but also cultivate a supportive and caring workplace atmosphere.

lady-getting-chair-massage-with-a-speech-bubble-saying-this-is-great

Health Screenings

Health screenings at work are more than just a preventive measure; they are a clear statement of your commitment to your employees’ health and longevity.

By offering regular health assessments, companies can catch potential health issues early, prevent disease progression, and reduce absenteeism.

This proactive approach not only helps maintain a healthier workforce but also boosts morale by showing employees that their health is valued at the highest levels of the organisation.

As employees feel looked after, trust and loyalty towards the company grow, fostering a supportive and productive workplace environment.

Interactive Workshops

Interactive workshops breathe new life into the daily grind.

These workshops can enhance workplace culture by engaging employees directly in their own growth and learning.

Sessions can cover a range of topics from technical skills to soft skills.

For instance, a workshop on gratitude could be one option, helping employees recognise and appreciate the positive aspects of their work and colleagues.

Such workshops equip employees with valuable tools and create a collaborative and appreciative working atmosphere.

Sessions like this help to build a strong team spirit and enhances overall workplace satisfaction.

This makes each session a stepping stone towards a more cohesive and motivated workforce, and awesome culture.

staff-in-a-creative-workshop

Flexible Work Arrangements

Flexible work arrangements are essential in today’s work environment, blending life’s demands with professional responsibilities.

Offering options like working from home, flexible hours, and compressed workweeks respects individual needs and acknowledges that life extends beyond the office.

Such flexibility can dramatically boost morale and productivity by reducing commute stress, supporting personal commitments, and allowing employees to work when they feel most energised.

The result?

A more dedicated, satisfied workforce that values the trust and autonomy their employer provides.

This can strengthen loyalty and reduce turnover rates.

This modern take on work arrangements meets the evolving expectations of today’s talent, and positions companies as forward-thinking and employee-centric.

Team Away Days

Team away days are a vibrant splash of fun in the routine of work, serving as a powerful tool to break down barriers and boost team spirit.

These planned outings offer a change of scenery that can spark creativity and foster new connections among team members.

The casual, often informal nature of these days away from the office allows individuals to see each other in a new light, enhancing understanding and cooperation back at work.

Ultimately, team away days can rejuvenate and re-energize your workforce.

This can lead to increased collaboration and a stronger, more together workplace culture.

Countries with the Best Work-Life Balance

In no particular order, these 5 countries highlight why they have the best work-life balance.

Italy

This European country is home to over 1500 lakes, including some of the most beautiful and deepest in Europe.

With most of the lakes being surrounded by stunning landscapes, this has inspired artists and poets for centuries.

It also makes our top 5 for best work-life balance.

According to the BBC, full-time employees in Italy spend 69% of their day on personal care and leisure.

This makes it the country where people appear to have the most leisure time.

16.5 hours of their day is spent, not at work!

Italy is also a country that doesn’t seem to have many employees working long and tiresome weeks.

According to the OECD, 10% of employees in the OECD work 50 hours or more per week.

However, in Italy, only 3% of employees work more than 50 hours a week.

Does this make you want to live there?

Let’s see what the other 4 countries have to offer.

Italian-flag

France

Known for its influence on the world of fashion, hosting the most prestigious fashion weeks, and for eating frog’s legs. Ha ha

France appears to be a country with a great work-life balance.

France has a whopping 16.2 hours per day of personal and leisure time.

This means on average, they are only at work for 7.8 hours of the day.

Regarding statutory annual leave, France seems to have one of the highest with a whopping 36 days.

This consists of 25 days of annual leave and 11 public holidays.

French culture also appears to promote a sense of relaxation and rest.

It is also said that locals prioritise non-work time.

They also have below the average when it comes to working 50 hours a week or more.

Although not quite as good as Italy, only 8% of French employees work more than 50 hours a week.

french-flag

Denmark

This is a country that I loved visiting and I’m not surprised to see it in the top 5.

With its bright colourful houses, friendly culture, and commitment to sustainability and green living, I can see why people would want to work here.

In Denmark, only 1% of employees work more than 50-hour weeks.

Most people work 8am – 4pm and prioritise family time.

In fact, 4pm -7pm is considered sacred family time.

And if you don’t have a family yet, you can use this time to go to the gym, see friends or whatever is enjoyable to you.

Flexible working is also highly supported in demark.

In 1998 the Danish introduced their FleksJob scheme.

This is where employees can request different working hours, patterns, or even less physically demanding tasks, and more.

Just like France, Denmark also has 36 days of statutory annual leave.

25 days of annual leave and 9-11 days of public holidays depending on the year.

Danish employees are also entitled to 100% of their wages for sick days.

Spain

Known for its afternoon siestas, fiery flamenco dancing, and vibrant festivals, Spain is another European country to make the top 5.

In Spain, it’s said that only 2.5% of employees work very long hours and Spanish employees devote most of their time to leisure and personal care.

Among some companies in Spain, they still allow a long lunch break. (Siesta)

And in summer there is a common Friday tradition known as Jornada intensiva where employees will work a continuous day, without a break to finish work early.

This means people can have more time to enjoy life after work.

Does it sound like you want to live and work here?

Well, let’s look at our final country.

New Zealand

Known for its breathtaking landscapes, where the spirit of adventure meets the serenity of nature, New Zealand makes the top 5.

It’s also where they filmed The Lord of the Rings.

Although a whopping 14% of employees work more than 50-hour weeks, New Zealand still offers 31 days of statutory annual leave.

20 days of annual leave, 11 public holidays.

New Zealand is also a country that values health and work-life balance.

According to Provisas, the country offers flexible hours, part-time work, and job-sharing options.

People also seem to have a strong culture of family and community, and many employers offer paid parental leave as well as opportunities for volunteering.

Overall, these 5 countries highlight great ways to encourage work-life balance but employers could also do more.

Let’s look at what companies can do to promote work-life balance.

How Companies Can Promote Work-Life Balance?

Achieving a healthy work-life balance in any workplace is crucial for the wellbeing of employees and the overall success of a company.

A company plays a significant role in shaping the work-life balance of their people through their initiatives and policies.

Here are some key strategies companies can implement to promote work-life balance:

Flexible Work Arrangements

Offering flexible working hours and remote work can make a big difference in how employees manage their personal and professional lives.

A company that promotes Flexibility allows employees to adjust their schedules to better fit personal commitments.

These could include child care, education, or even personal health routines.

Flexible working allows employees to prioritise the things that help them feel their best.

Employees who feel their best will be more beneficial to the company they work for.

Wellbeing Initiatives

Companies that want to take work-life balance seriously can establish wellbeing programs that promote physical, mental, and emotional health.

This can include access to mental health resources, wellbeing workshops, physical health programs, and more!

Initiatives like company-sponsored fitness classes or gym memberships can help support health and wellbeing and encourage activity outside of work.

Regular wellbeing workshops can help employees learn strategies to manage stress, avoid burnout, and maintain a healthier lifestyle.

Implement Leave Policies

Implementing leave policies such as parental leave, sabbaticals, and personal days can help employees feel supported when they need to take time off work.

Encouraging employees to take their full annual leave entitlement without guilt also contributes to a healthier work environment.

Some companies allow employees to buy more holiday time should they need it.

Allowing employees enough leave gives them the opportunities to recharge and return to work with enthusiasm and commitment.

Employee Support and Resources

Providing resources that help employees manage their workload more effectively can contribute to better work-life balance.

This could include training in time management, access to productivity tools, and support from human resources for personal or family matters.

Effective time management can allow employees to be more productive without compromising personal time.

Encourage Regular Breaks and Downtime

A workplace environment that values breaks during the day helps prevent fatigue and keeps productivity high.

Regular breaks can help to increase productivity.

Companies could design their workspaces to include relaxation areas or provide activities that encourage a mental break.

This could include things like on-site massage, team outings or hobby groups.

Check out our blog on “How Breaks at Work Can Skyrocket Productivity

What Role Does Government Policy Play in Shaping Work-Life Balance?

Government policies set the legal standards and frameworks that influence how organisations operate support their employees.

These policies can ensure that work-life balance is not just a privilege for the few but a standard that benefits all workers.

Companies can go above and beyond legal policies to attract employees.

Here’s how government action can impact work-life balance:

Legislation on Working Hours

Governments create legislation that limits the number of hours an employee can work per week.

In the UK the maximum number of hours allowed to work is 48, however, some employees work beyond this.

Parental and Maternity Leave Policies

Strong parental and maternity leave policies allow parents to take time off work to care for their new children.

Policies like this allow time off without fear of losing jobs or a significant portion of their income.

Countries like Sweden and Canada offer extensive paid parental leave.

Studies show this improves parental wellbeing and supports equal parenting roles, which promotes better work-life balance.

dad-on-parental-leave-feeding-baby

Mandated Holiday and Sick Leave

Requiring employers to offer paid holiday and sick leave is another way governments can help employees recharge and recover without the stress of lost income.

This not only supports physical and mental health but also boosts productivity and job satisfaction upon the employee’s return.

As you’ve seen from above, each country has a different mandated holiday period.

Support for Childcare

Governments can provide support and subsidies for childcare.

This can help to reduce the barriers for parents to return to full employment.

Childcare that is affordable and accessible can influence a parent’s ability to balance work and family commitments.

Anti-Discrimination Laws

Ensuring that employees who take advantage of work-life balance policies (like parental leave or reduced hours) are not discriminated against is essential for these policies to be effective.

Anti-discrimination laws need to protect workers from being penalised for using their legal rights to manage work and personal life.

Work-life balance requires ongoing support and commitment from all employers who want to create a positive workplace culture.

At Loving Life, we help companies support the health and wellbeing of their employees.

According to Timeout, the UK is the world’s second most miserable country.

But how does this impact the workplace?

Whether it’s the often grey sky, long working hours, stagnant wages, lack of work-life balance, or something else, it needs to change!

In this article, we’re going to look at why UK employees are miserable as well as strategies to help reduce employees being miserable at work.

Why are UK Employees So Miserable at Work?

According to the Independent, more than one-third of UK employees are unhappy in their jobs.

But why is this?

Let’s look at 4 reasons why.

1. Lack of Recognition

I want you to imagine this. You’ve been working for three months on a project that will generate the company you worked for, thousands of pounds.

You’ve had to work late, and sacrifice time with friends and family to get the project completed.

And guess what?

You’ve done it!

The project has been completed and it’s been a major success.

But management barely acknowledged it and has just dumped the next project on your desk.

They have failed to recognise your accomplishment and it’s left you angry and bitter.

Well, you’re not alone.

According to an article by Wildgoose, 72% of employees feel they deserve more recognition from their employer.

Less recognised employees are 131% more likely to lose faith in their management team and company core values.

These employees are also twice as likely to experience an impact on their mental health.

All of this contributes to unhappy and miserable employees.

employee-recognition-written-on-a-post-it-note

2. Lack of Trust

Do you think UK employees trust their employer?

And do employers trust their employees?

According to people management less than half of employees trust their employer.

And according to Deloitte, two-thirds of employers do not trust their staff to work remotely.

Without trust in the workplace, how can we be happy?

Think of a situation where you may have been accused of something you didn’t do.

How did this make you feel?

If this was a situation in the workplace, this would not make us feel happy towards our employer.

When employees are not trusted it can make them feel resentful, angry, and unhappy.

Lack of trust is another thing employers are getting wrong when creating a great workplace culture.

3. Employee Stress

According to statistics from the HSE, the biggest reasons for work-related ill health are stress, depression, and anxiety.

In 2022/23 this was responsible for 49% of working days lost in the UK.

And what do you think is a major contributor to being miserable at work?

Stress!

According to an article by science.org, stress really does mess with your mind.

A study found that chronic stress can create many of the brain changes associated with mood disorders.

This means stress is contributing to low mood and miserable people.

Stressed-man

4. Limited Career Growth

Imagine this!

You’ve got a great job in a fancy office, with nice perks and great employee wellbeing initiatives, but there is very limited opportunity for career growth.

You feel stagnant and like you’re not going anywhere.

According to the APA lack of career growth opportunities is a big reason employees leave jobs.

And according to survey results, 91% of people said it was very important to have a job where they consistently have opportunities to learn.

If employees don’t feel like they’re learning, it’s another factor to miserable employees.

How Can Employers Support Miserable UK Employees?

Nobody wants to have miserable colleagues at work.

Supporting employees is crucial to create a positive workplace culture where individuals feel happy and satisfied in their job roles.

Here are some practical steps employers can take to support their staff.

Support Employee Health and Wellbeing

Our health and wellbeing are the single most important thing to every one of us.

Without health, we can’t work, or do any of the things that are important to us.

Supporting employee wellbeing can involve a range of things including:

happy-staff-at-an-employee-wellbeing-workshop

Organise Fun Initiatives

Organising fun initiatives in the workplace can significantly boost employee morale and alleviate feelings of misery.

Employers can organise team-building activities, such as group outings, game nights, or company events, to strengthen colleague relationships.

Additionally, hosting social events like office parties, lunchtime gatherings, or sports tournaments can provide much-needed opportunities for employees to unwind, socialise, and have fun outside of work tasks.

By creating a more enjoyable and engaging work environment, employers can help to prevent individuals from being miserable.

tyler-delivering-a-wellbeing-workshop

Reduce Workplace Stress

Earlier in this blog we explained how stress was a major contributing factor to miserable employees.

Therefore, if companies can help to reduce employee stress, they can help to improve the happiness of those employees.

Employers must find ways to reduce employee stress.

Whether it’s by reducing workload, providing coping with stress workshops, employee massage, or other initiatives.

lady-getting-massage-from-a-loving-life-massage-therapist

Promote Work-Life Balance

Encouraging flexible working arrangements, such as remote work or flexible working hours, can help employees better manage their personal and professional responsibilities.

When employees feel they have control over their lives, this reduces their chances of being unhappy.

Additionally, setting clear boundaries around work hours and discouraging overtime can prevent burnout and improve overall wellbeing.

National Work-Life Week

What Impact Does Management Have on Miserable UK Employees?

According to Forbes, managers have as much of an impact on employee mental health as their partners.

Management plays an important role in shaping the workplace atmosphere.

Managers directly influence employee satisfaction and morale.

When management fails to provide clear communication, support, or recognition, it can lead to a disheartened workforce.

In the UK, where work culture often emphasizes stoicism, the lack of positive engagement from managers can make employees feel undervalued and isolated.

Effective leaders are those who listen to their teams, provide constructive feedback, and create an environment of growth and opportunity.

On the other hand, poor management practices can exacerbate job dissatisfaction, increase stress levels, and potentially lead to higher turnover rates and unhappy staff.

Managers must adopt an empathetic approach, aiming to understand and address the concerns of their employees.

This can help to mitigate feelings of misery and disengagement at work.

What is the Best Time of Year to Plan a Team Away Day in London?

The best time to plan a team building activities in London largely depends on the type of activities you have in mind and your team’s preferences.

Here are some considerations:

For Outdoor Activities

If you’re planning outdoor activities, the months from June to August are typically the warmest and have the longest days.

However, they also tend to be the busiest in terms of tourists.

For a balance between good weather and fewer crowds, consider the shoulder months of May and September.

For Indoor Activities

If your team away day is focused on indoor activities, such as museum workshops or theatre visits, then the time of year is less critical.

However, the winter months, particularly December, can be quite festive with Christmas markets and special events.

Why not check out our blog on team building venues here.

For Budget Considerations

If budget is a concern, the off-peak travel season, from November to early March (excluding the Christmas/New Year period), can offer lower prices for travel and accommodation.

However, do keep in mind that the weather can be quite cold and days are shorter.

For Avoiding Rain

London is known for its unpredictable weather, and rain is possible throughout the year.

However, the driest months are typically from March to June.

Remember, no matter when you plan your team away day, London has a wealth of team building activities to offer year-round.

It’s always a good idea to have a mix of activities indoor and outdoor, so you can adapt to the weather if needed.

You could even take some card or board games as a backup.

Get your creative juices flowing if you need to.

How to Ensure the Safety of Your Team During an Away Day in London?

As some who was born and raised in London, I can’t stress enough the importance of ensuring team safety during your away day.

Safety in London involves some key things to consider that you may not have thought about:

Street Safety

London is a bustling city with busy streets.

Encourage your team to be mindful of traffic when crossing roads, especially in areas where the traffic flow may be different from what they’re used to.

This is essential, especially for those in large groups.

Pickpocketing Awareness

Like any major city, pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas.

Remind your team to keep their belongings secure at all times, avoid displaying expensive items in public, and be aware of their surroundings.

Public Transport Safety

If your team is using the Tube, buses, or trams, remind them to mind the gap between the train and the platform.

The trains operators will usually remind you of this.

Hold on to rails when standing, and be aware of emergency procedures.

Emergency Contacts

Ensure that everyone has the contact details of the event organiser and knows the location of the nearest hospital.

It’s also a good idea to familiarise your team with the UK’s emergency number (999).

Risk Assessment

Conduct a risk assessment of the activities planned.

This should include any specific risks associated with the locations you’ll be visiting in London.

Group Check-Ins

Regularly check that all team members are accounted for, especially when moving between locations.

The capital can be extremely busy and it’s easy to get lost in big crowds.

Health and Hygiene

Encourage team members to maintain good hygiene practices, particularly when using public transport or visiting busy public places.

Bring antibacterial gels and wipes just in case they’re needed.

Briefing

Provide a safety briefing at the start of the away day.

This should cover all the points above and any other safety considerations specific to the activities planned.

Being aware of these London-specific safety considerations allows you to ensure a safe and enjoyable away day for your team in London.

colleague-team-briefing-outside

Planning team building activities in the capital offers a wealth of opportunities for unique and engaging activities that can strengthen team bonds and create lasting memories.

From exploring the city’s rich history and diverse culture to participating in workshops and tours, there’s something for every team.

Remember, the key to a successful team away day is in the planning, so take the time to consider your team’s interests and the unique opportunities that London has to offer.

What is Employee Happiness?

Employee happiness – sounds simple, right? But there’s more to it than just a sunny disposition at the water cooler.

It’s about feeling good at work, and even when you think about work.

It’s about waking up and looking forward to the day, not dreading it.

Happiness at work isn’t just about loving what you do, although that’s a big part of it.

It’s also about feeling valued and appreciated.

It’s about knowing you are part of a team, and that your work matters.

Imagine this. You’re working in a place where you’re encouraged to grow.

You’ve been given opportunities to learn new skills, to step outside your comfort zone.

Colleagues and management recognise you for your efforts and accomplishments, both big and small.

How about this? Your boss and colleagues don’t just treat you as another cog in the machine, but as a human being.

They respect your time, your life outside work, and your need for balance.

They care about your mental health, your physical well-being, and your overall quality of life.

In short, employee happiness is about feeling good, valued, and cared for at work.

It’s about thriving, not just surviving, in the workplace.

Why is Employee Happiness Important in the Workplace?

Think about your favourite dessert.

Doesn’t it just make everything better?

Now, imagine if work could feel that good. That’s what we’re aiming for with employee happiness.

Happy employees aren’t just more pleasant to be around, they’re also more productive.

It’s simple: when we’re happy, we’re more engaged. We’re eager to contribute, to bring our best selves to the table.

Happiness also sparks creativity.

It’s like opening the floodgates of fresh ideas and innovative solutions.

Happy employees are problem solvers, ready to take on new challenges.

Happiness is also contagious. It can uplift the entire mood of a workplace.

And in a happy environment, teamwork thrives. People collaborate better, trust more, and conflict less.

And let’s not forget – happy employees stick around. They’re less likely to look for greener pastures.

This means lower turnover costs and a stronger, more experienced team.

But perhaps most importantly, prioritising happiness shows employees they’re valued.

Not just for their output, but as people. And when employees feel valued, they value their work in return.

So, the importance of happiness in the workplace?

It’s a no-brainer!

It boosts productivity, promotes creativity, encourages teamwork, and nurtures loyalty.

Above all, it creates a healthier, more human-centric work environment.

And that’s a win for everyone.

The Connection Between Employee Happiness and Business Success

Picture your workplace as a garden. Your employees are the plants, and happiness is the water that helps them flourish.

When they bloom, so does your business. That’s the connection between employee happiness and business success.

Happy employees are productivity powerhouses. They’re like turbocharged engines, driving your business forward.

They’re motivated, focused, and dedicated, and that has a direct impact on your bottom line.

Innovation is another area where happiness makes a huge difference.

Happy employees are more creative and open to new ideas.

They’re the ones who come up with those game-changing ideas that can propel your business to new heights.

Employee happiness also fuels employee loyalty.

Happy employees are less likely to quit, reducing turnover and its associated costs.

Plus, happy employees make for great brand ambassadors.

They’re more likely to talk positively about your company, attracting top talent and even new customers.

In short, employee happiness isn’t just a nice-to-have.

It’s a must-have for any business aiming for success.

It drives productivity, customer satisfaction, innovation, and loyalty.

And in the competitive world of business, those are major wins!

How Can Employee Happiness Contribute to Customer Satisfaction

Ever been served by a happy, smiling person? It feels good, doesn’t it?

Now that’s what we’re talking about when we say employee happiness can boost customer satisfaction.

Happy employees are like sunshine on a cloudy day. Their energy is infectious.

They spread positivity, and that leaves customers feeling good. And customers who feel good are more likely to return, and to recommend your business to others.

But it’s not just about the warm and fuzzies. Happy employees are also more motivated.

They take pride in their work, and it shows. They’re committed to providing the best service, and solving problems with a smile.

And let’s not forget – happy employees are more engaged. They’re in tune with the company’s mission, and they strive to deliver on it.

They’re more likely to understand and meet customers’ needs, leading to better experiences and higher satisfaction.

The bottom line? Employee happiness and customer satisfaction are two peas in a pod.

Happy employees create happy customers. And happy customers?

They’re the key to a successful business.

So, want to keep your customers satisfied? Start by keeping your employees happy!

How Can Employee Happiness Increase Employee Retention

Ever had a job that made you jump out of bed each morning? That’s what a happy employee feels like.

And when you’re that excited about work, why would you leave?

Employee happiness is like super glue—it sticks your team together and helps with employee retention.

When employees are happy at work, they’re less likely to go job hunting.

They’re content where they are, and that boosts retention.

Happy employees feel valued, respected, and heard.

They know they’re more than just a number. They have a sense of belonging, a connection with their team, and a purpose in their work.

These feelings can turn a job into a long-term commitment.

Plus, happiness fosters a positive work environment, making it a pleasant place to be.

Think about it—who’d want to leave a workplace where they’re surrounded by happy, supportive, and cooperative colleagues?

Moreover, happy employees see opportunities for growth and development in their current roles.

They’re not just working for a paycheck, but for personal and professional progress.

In a nutshell, happiness is a powerful tool for retaining your best employees.

It keeps them engaged, fulfilled, and loyal.

And retaining top talent not only saves you the cost and hassle of recruitment, it also ensures the continuity and success of your business.

10 Components of Employee Happiness

1. Recognition and Appreciation

Hearing a simple “thank you” or “great job” can light up an employee’s day. Regularly acknowledging hard work fuels motivation and happiness.

2. Healthy Work-Life Balance

When employees have time to relax, pursue hobbies, or be with family, they’re happier. Work-life balance is key.

National Work-Life Week

3. Supportive Work Environment

A positive, inclusive workplace where everyone supports each other is a happiness booster.

It’s about fostering a culture of camaraderie and respect.

4. Job Security

Knowing they have a stable job reduces stress and contributes to an employee’s happiness.

No one likes feeling like they’re walking on thin ice!

5. Fair Compensation

Earning a fair wage for their work is a fundamental part of happiness. Money isn’t everything, but it sure does matter.

6. Opportunities for Growth

Employees who can learn, develop new skills, and climb the career ladder are happier.

Growth is a natural human desire.

7. Purposeful Work

Doing work that aligns with their values and contributes to a bigger purpose can make employees happier.

Purpose brings meaning to the grind.

8. Autonomy

Having the freedom to make decisions and manage their work leads to happier employees. Trust breeds confidence and satisfaction.

9. Healthy Relationships

Good relationships with colleagues and superiors are vital. Feeling connected and valued by others promotes happiness.

10. Wellbeing Support

An employer who cares about their employees’ physical and mental health scores big on the happiness scale.

Wellness initiatives like on-site massage or wellbeing workshops show employees they’re cared for beyond their output.

Strategies to Increase Employee Happiness

Elevating employee happiness isn’t just about business—it’s a matter of human wellbeing.

So, how do we shape a work environment that promotes not just productivity, but also the joy of being?

First, let’s emphasize the power of recognition and reward.

There’s magic in a heartfelt “thank you” or a personal note acknowledging a job well done.

This small act can do wonders for an employee’s sense of self-worth and happiness.

Then, there’s the work-life balance. Encourage employees to live fully, not just work hard.

A balanced employee is healthier, happier, and more productive.

This includes ensuring employees take their well-deserved vacation time and don’t burn the candle at both ends.

But the work environment itself also plays a crucial role. Cultivating a positive culture, one that’s steeped in respect, trust, and inclusivity, can uplift everyone’s spirits.

It’s about creating a space where everyone feels they belong.

When we talk about wellbeing, we can’t overlook the importance of job security.

When employees feel secure about their professional future, they can focus on doing their best work instead of worrying about what tomorrow holds.

Fair compensation also matters—a lot. Everyone deserves to be paid fairly for their labour.

Offering competitive salaries and benefits not only makes employees happier but also shows them they are genuinely valued.

And let’s not forget about growth opportunities.

Providing ongoing training and personal development opportunities not only enhances their skill set but also contributes to their sense of purpose, personal growth, and career satisfaction.

The power of autonomy in fostering happiness should not be underestimated.

When employees are given the trust and freedom to make decisions, it instils a sense of ownership and satisfaction that significantly contributes to happiness.

Wellbeing workshops, stress management sessions, and mental health initiatives play a critical role in cultivating happiness.

wellbeing-workshop-with-tyler-lowe

Encouraging employees to take care of their mental health helps foster a work environment where people feel cared for on a human level—not just as a worker.

Last, but certainly not least, keeping the company’s purpose clear is crucial.

When employees understand how their work contributes to the bigger picture, it instils a sense of pride and fulfilment that fuels happiness.

Remember, creating a happy workplace through wellbeing initiatives is not an overnight process, but a journey.

However, the result is a work environment where employees are not just surviving but thriving—a win for everyone involved!

How to Measure Employee Happiness

Measuring happiness might sound like trying to catch a cloud, but it’s actually doable.

Here’s how you can gauge the joy in your workplace.

1. Employee Satisfaction Surveys

These are your compass for navigating the landscape of employee happiness. Regular, anonymous surveys can help assess various factors like job satisfaction, work-life balance, and relationships with colleagues.

The more specific your questions, the more insightful your findings will be.

Online survey on an ipad

2. eNPS (Employee Net Promoter Score)

Employee Net Promoter Score is a way of measuring how likely your employees are to recommend your organisation as a good place to work.

This tool cuts to the chase with a simple yet telling question: “How likely are you to recommend this company as a place to work?”

Scoring this from 0 to 10 can give you a clear picture of employee happiness and loyalty. A high score means you’re on the right path!

3. One-on-One Check-ins

Don’t underestimate the power of a good old-fashioned conversation.

Regular check-ins with each team member can reveal a lot about their state of happiness.

This practice fosters an open dialogue, allowing you to directly ask about their happiness and any concerns they might have.

4. Observation of Behaviour

Look for signs of engagement and satisfaction in daily interactions.

Happy employees tend to actively participate in meetings, collaborate effectively with their team, and join company events.

Their energy and enthusiasm can be contagious, contributing to a positive workplace atmosphere.

5. Retention Rates

These can be a significant indicator of overall happiness.

High turnover might signal dissatisfaction, while a steady team suggests contentment.

Remember, if your employees are sticking around, you’re likely doing something right!

6. Feedback Channels

Encourage employees to express their feelings and thoughts about their work and the workplace through multiple channels.

This could be through anonymous suggestion boxes, digital platforms, or face-to-face communication.

The goal is to create an environment where employees feel their voice matters.

7. Wellbeing Assessments

Regular health and wellbeing assessments can reveal how your wellbeing initiatives are impacting happiness.

They can measure things like stress levels, mental health, and overall wellbeing, all of which are closely linked to happiness.

happy Men laughing and smiling

Remember, measuring employee happiness is not a one-and-done deal.

It’s a continuous process that requires commitment, just like your efforts to foster happiness.

Regular assessments will help you keep a finger on the pulse of your team’s mood and make necessary adjustments to keep the happiness level high.

By now, you’ve learned the true essence of employee happiness, its importance in the workplace, and how it’s linked to business success, customer satisfaction, and employee retention.

We’ve also discussed the key components that contribute to happiness and strategies to increase it.

Don’t forget, it’s equally important to measure happiness regularly to ensure your efforts are working.

Remember, happiness isn’t just a state—it’s a continuous journey.

As you continue your quest towards creating a happy workplace, know that every step you take contributes to building a thriving, productive, and fulfilled team.

After all, happiness is the real key to success!
